                                                     CIVIL ENGINEER OPENING


POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Responsible for the overall design and engineering of Civil systems for projects as assigned from pre-schematic phase through construction closeout under the supervision of a Project Engineer.

REPORTS TO:
Department Head, Civil Engineering Department, with day to day supervision and guidance provided by Project Engineer/Project Manager.

RELATIONSHIP TO OTHERS:
Participates as a team member with engineering staff on assigned projects. Interacts with clients, vendors, survey crews and other engineering disciplines.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Act as lead engineer on projects
Performs site visits for documentation and cost estimating of existing systems and building conditions
Coordinates plan layout and drawings
Performs Civil calculations and develops appropriate system concepts and layouts
Designs Civil systems, including calculations and cost estimating under the supervision of a Project Engineer/Project Manager
Prepares technical specifications
Reviews and evaluates shop drawings and product submittals
Visits construction sites to inspect work in progress or completed
Mentors Civil Technicians
Prepares Engineering Reports
Completes complex and specialty types of design
Assists Project Engineers in developing & maintaining department standards
Participates in a professional organization
Stays abreast of technical advancements in respective field and disseminates information to staff
Additional duties as assigned by the Department Head, or Project Engineer

AUTHORITY/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Direct and supervise Civil Technicians as assigned. May occasionally direct duties of other Design Engineers as assigned.

PERSONAL QUALITIES:
Ability to interact successfully with all levels of staff, clients and vendors. Able to work in a collaborative process. Able to plan, organize and implement with successful and timely results. Able to mentor and direct department teams. Open to change; receptive to new ideas and concepts.

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION GUIDELINES:
Professional Engineering License in Michigan a must.
Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering with a minimum of 4 years of experience.  
Proficiency in AutoCAD, Land Desktop, Civil Design, Survey Software, word processing and spreadsheet management programs with working knowledge of applicable standards. (Microstation/Geopak a plus)
